Pet Safety Guide: Essential Oils to Avoid

Essential oils smell wonderful and can make a home feel calm and inviting. But if you share your space with dogs, cats, or other pets, it’s important to understand the real risks.

Cats are especially vulnerable. They lack a key liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) that helps break down many compounds found in essential oils. Because of this, oils that are fine for people can build up in a cat’s system and cause toxicity, even from breathing the scent or licking residue off their fur. Dogs are generally less sensitive but can still be harmed, particularly by concentrated oils or prolonged exposure. Birds are also highly sensitive to airborne fragrances.

Oils commonly flagged as toxic or high risk around pets include:

Tea tree (melaleuca), pennyroyal, wintergreen, sweet birch, pine, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus oils (lemon, orange, lime, bergamot, grapefruit, etc.), yang ylang, and others such as hyssop, oregano, and thyme.

Even “gentler” oils can irritate airways or cause problems when used in high concentrations, active diffusers, or closed rooms.

How pets get exposed

•  Inhaling vapor from candles, sprays, or diffusers

•  Walking through spilled oil or treated surfaces, then licking their paws

•  Direct application to skin or fur (never recommended)

•  Accidental ingestion from open bottles or residues on hands and furniture

Signs of possible essential oil exposure can include drooling, vomiting, lethargy, wobbliness, tremors, difficulty breathing, coughing, or skin irritation. If you notice any of these, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline right away (ASPCA Animal Poison Control or Pet Poison Helpline).

Our recommendation

All of our candles, sprays, and oils carry a clear “do not use around pets” warning for a reason. The safest choice is to enjoy these products in pet free rooms, keep sprays and candles out of reach of pets, and ventilate well. When in doubt, skip essential oil products in homes with pets altogether or choose them only after checking with your veterinarian about your specific animals.

We want you and your furry family members to feel good about every purchase you make. If you have questions about any of our products, just ask and we’re happy to help you choose thoughtfully.

Love,

Spirit Gifts & More + Furry Friends
